What to look for

  • Material – cotton with added elastane is breathable and holds its shape. Microfiber and modal are smoother, dry faster, and are well-suited for summer and physical activity.
  • Leg length – shorter is classic, longer doesn't ride up when walking and reduces thigh chafing.
  • Waistband – a wide, soft band doesn't constrict and doesn't roll up in the wash.
  • Seams – flat seams don't chafe the skin.

How to choose your size

The best way to choose boxer brief size is by waist and hip circumference. Each manufacturer provides its own size chart – you will find it in the product description. If your measurements fall between sizes, choose the larger one, especially for models with a higher cotton content.

The vast majority of models are made from cotton with a small amount of elastane, which ensures that the fabric returns to its shape after a full day and doesn't become baggy at the knees.

The choice between styles comes down to leg length and what you wear over them. Longer boxer briefs end mid-thigh, don't roll up under jeans, and reduce chafing during long walks or bike rides. Briefs use less material, so they don't show under fitted trousers and dry faster after washing. Models marked as "sport" usually have a higher elastane content and narrower side panels.

Choose your size based on your hip circumference measured at the widest point, not your trouser size, as these two numbers rarely match. If you're between sizes, take the larger one: a waistband that's too tight will roll up after a few hours. Also, check the width of the waistband itself; a wider band is less likely to dig into your stomach.

Wash cotton underwear at 40 degrees and avoid tumble drying, as high temperatures are most damaging to the elastane in the waistband.
