Knee-highs end just below the knee. They are worn under trousers instead of tights, as they do not constrict the waist and are more comfortable for a full day in the office, as well as with knee-length dresses in autumn.

The comfort is determined by the top elastic band. If it's too narrow and strong, it will leave a mark on the calf and can be constricting – look for models with a wide, soft elastic band or a comfort-finish without elastic. This is the most important parameter if you are prone to swelling.

Knee-highs are divided into sheer, measured in DEN, and knitted from cotton, wool, or bamboo. Sheer ones replace tights under trousers; thicker ones serve as socks with a longer shaft and work well in winter with boots, as they do not slide down to the ankle.

Knee-high socks reach just below the knee and are an intermediate solution between socks and tights. Worn under trousers and longer skirts, they provide warmth without a constricting waistband, and in summer, in a thin version, they replace tights in closed shoes.

The products are divided into two groups. Thin elastane knee-highs, given in densities of several or dozens of DEN, are the equivalent of tights - transparent, smooth, in nude and black colours. Thicker, cotton or wool ones, are a warming layer for cold days.

The key element is the ribbing. It should be wide and soft, preferably with silicone strips on the inside if the model is not to slip down. A band that is too narrow digs into the calf and leaves a mark that lasts for hours.

Thin elastane products should be washed in a mesh bag and separately from clothing with zips or Velcro. A single snag is enough to create a run, and in smooth knitwear, it runs along the entire length of the product. Wash thicker cotton and wool models at 40 degrees and dry flat so that the leg does not lose its shape.
