Footlets are the shortest socks: they end below the ankle and are meant to be invisible in the shoe. They are worn with ballet flats, loafers, sneakers, and low shoes when the cuff of a regular sock would be visible.

The biggest problem with this style is them slipping off the heel. Two elements solve this: a silicone strip sewn inside the heel and a contoured, higher back. Models with a straight, flat heel and no silicone almost always slip down after a few hundred steps.

The second criterion is the depth of the cut. Very shallow footlets, like ballet-style ones, disappear completely in the shoe, but they can squeeze wider feet. Slightly higher versions stay on more securely and are a safer choice for all-day wear.

No-show socks have one job: to be invisible and not slip off your heel. Sounds simple, but this is where they most often fail, and the reason almost always comes down to three things – the depth of the cut, the presence of silicone, and the size fit.

The depth of the cut is chosen to match the shoe. For sneakers and low-cut shoes, a classic no-show sock, ending just below the ankle, is sufficient. For ballet flats and loafers, a deeply cut no-show sock with a low front, described as invisible, is needed. For sports shoes, a model with a slightly raised back is more comfortable as it protects the Achilles tendon from rubbing against the upper.

A silicone strip on the heel determines comfort. It can be in the form of a narrow band or several dots; more important than the shape is that it's not glued directly onto very thin knitwear, which quickly wears through. Over time, silicone loses its grip – if your no-show socks start slipping after a year of wear, it's normal wear and tear, not a defect.

Composition and size. Cotton with added polyamide and elastane is standard: it breathes while maintaining its shape. Bamboo is smoother and slides less in the shoe. Sizes are given in ranges – a sock that is too large wrinkles under the toes and pushes the heel out of the shoe, so if you're on the border of two sizes, it's better to choose the smaller one.

Wash no-show socks in a laundry bag, at a low temperature. High temperatures and tumble dryers are what destroy the silicone strip fastest.
