Fabric and comfort

The biggest problem with this style is slipping off the heel. Two things solve it: a silicone strip sewn inside at the heel, and a shaped, higher back. Styles with a straight, flat heel and no silicone slip off after a few hundred steps, almost without exception.

The second criterion is how low they are cut. Very shallow, ballet-flat styles disappear inside the shoe completely, but on a wider foot they can pinch. Slightly higher versions stay put more reliably and are the safer choice for a full day.

Fabric: cotton with elastane for everyday wear, bamboo for hot weather, technical knits for sport. An extra terry sole cushions the foot when running.

Composition and size. Cotton with added polyamide and elastane is the standard: it breathes while holding its shape. Bamboo is smoother and moves around less inside the shoe. Sizes are given as ranges - a sock that is too big wrinkles under the toes and pushes the heel out of the shoe, so on the border between two ranges, take the smaller one.

How to choose your size

No-show socks have one job: to stay invisible and not slip off the heel. It sounds simple, but this is exactly where they most often fail, and the reason almost always comes down to three things - how low they are cut, whether they have silicone, and whether the size is right.

Which style to choose

Match the cut to the shoe. For trainers and low shoes a classic no-show sock, ending just below the ankle bone, is enough. For ballet flats and loafers you need a deeply cut sock with a low front, described as invisible. For sports shoes a style with a slightly raised back is more comfortable, as it protects the Achilles tendon from rubbing against the collar.

What to look out for

The silicone strip at the heel decides comfort. It may take the form of a narrow band or a few dots; more important than its shape is that it is not applied straight onto very fine knit, which wears through quickly. Silicone loses its grip over time - if your socks start slipping after a year of wear, that is normal wear and tear, not a fault.

Wash them in a mesh bag at a low temperature. High temperatures and the tumble dryer destroy the silicone strip faster than anything else.
