The material is selected based on its intended use. Cotton with elastane is versatile, bamboo stays fresh longer for all-day wear, wool keeps you warm even when your foot is damp, and functional fabrics with polyamide dry quickly after a workout.

Two details are worth checking: the cuff and the toe seam. A narrow, strong cuff leaves a mark on the calf - if you are prone to swelling, choose versions with a wide, soft finish. A flat seam prevents chafing during long walks.

Choosing socks starts with the shoe. For ballet flats and loafers, footie socks with a silicone strip on the heel are suitable. For sneakers and low-cut shoes, ankle socks are ideal. For ankle boots and high-top sneakers, models with a cuff a few centimeters higher work better, as the shoe's shaft doesn't rub against the skin. Knee-high socks and high socks are worn with boots and dresses.

Materials. Combed cotton is smooth and breathable. Bamboo regulates moisture and is pleasantly cool. Wool and merino keep you warm on cooler days and don't retain odor as quickly as synthetics. Openwork and lurex models are decorative but thinner and more prone to snagging, so wash them in a laundry bag.

What to watch out for? The pressure of the elastic in the cuff – a lasting red mark on the calf means the elastic is too tight or the size is too small. The toe seam, which can press into the foot in a narrow shoe. And the composition: for a model described as cotton, it's worth checking the actual cotton content, as the addition of polyamide can be significant, even though it's responsible for durability.
