They come in two basic variants. Classic cotton with elastane is versatile for everyday wear. Models made of microfiber and functional knits are thinner, wick away moisture faster, and don't show under a suit – these are the choice for workouts and hot weather.

When purchasing, check three things: the width of the waistband and whether it has a lined edge, the leg length, and the front construction. Models with a contoured, sewn-in front instead of a flat seam are noticeably more comfortable when sitting and walking for extended periods.

Choose the size based on your waist circumference. Boxer briefs should fit snugly but not leave a mark from the waistband. Wash at 40 degrees, without fabric softener, which stretches elastic bands. Boxer shorts have replaced briefs in most men's drawers for one reason: the longer leg eliminates chafing on the inner thigh. However, not every model offers the same comfort, and the differences come down to the cut, waistband, and fabric composition.

Cut. Classic, loose-fitting boxer shorts made of woven fabric offer freedom of movement but tend to roll up under fitted trousers. Fitted boxer shorts made of knitted fabric with elastane cling to the body and are ideal for wearing under jeans or suit trousers. Long-leg variants, reaching lower on the thigh, are chosen for sports and by taller men. Briefs remain the most compact option, useful under tight-fitting trousers.

Material. Cotton with a few percent elastane is the everyday standard: it breathes and returns to its shape. Bamboo and modal are smoother and cooler to the touch. Functional polyester knits wick away moisture and dry faster, making them better for workouts than cotton, which absorbs moisture.

What to watch out for? The waistband – a wide, woven one is more durable than a narrow, sewn-on one, and less likely to roll. Side seams: seamless models or those with bonded seams don't show through under trousers. The front fly, which many fitted models simply don't have – this is a matter of preference, not quality. And the size: boxer shorts are chosen by waist circumference, not by trouser size.

Washing at 30-40 degrees without fabric softener maintains the elasticity of the waistband longest.
