Which style to choose
There are two basic versions. Classic cotton-and-elastane boxers are the everyday all-rounder. Microfibre and technical knits are finer, wick moisture faster and do not show under a suit - the choice for training and for hot weather.
Check three things when buying: the width of the waistband and whether its edge is lined, the length of the leg, and the construction of the front. Styles with a shaped, inset front instead of a flat seam are noticeably more comfortable over long periods of sitting and walking.
Choose your size by waist measurement. Boxers should sit close without leaving a mark from the waistband. Wash at 40 degrees, without fabric softener, which stretches elastic. Boxers pushed briefs out of most men's drawers for one reason: a longer leg removes friction on the inner thigh. Not every style delivers the same comfort, though, and the differences come down to cut, waistband and knit composition.
Cut. Classic loose boxers made from woven fabric give freedom of movement, but they ride up under close-fitting trousers. Fitted boxers in knit with elastane hug the body and are the ones that work under jeans or suit trousers. Long-leg versions reach further down the thigh and are chosen for sport and by taller men. Briefs remain the most compact option, useful under tight trousers.
Fabric and comfort
Fabric. Cotton with a few per cent of elastane is the everyday standard: it breathes and returns to shape. Bamboo and modal are smoother and cooler to the touch. Technical polyester knits wick moisture and dry faster, so they work better for training than cotton, which soaks through.
How to choose your size
What to watch for? The waistband - a wide, woven one is more durable than a narrow one stitched on top, and it rolls less often. The side seams: seamless styles, or ones with bonded seams, do not print through under trousers. The fly, which many fitted styles simply do not have - a matter of preference, not quality. And the size: boxers are chosen by waist measurement, not by trouser size.
Washing and care
Washing at 30-40 degrees without softener keeps the waistband elastic for longest.
