Push-up bras

A push-up bra has a pad sewn into the bottom of the cup that lifts and draws the bust inward. The effect depends on the thickness of the pad: models with light padding add roundness under a blouse, while versions with a distinct wedge create a prominent cleavage and are chosen for dresses with deep necklines.

Push-up bras work well for smaller cup sizes and for breasts that have lost their firmness after breastfeeding. For larger cup sizes, the pad usually gets in the way because it adds volume where it's not needed – in that case, a soft, underwired bra is a better choice.

When purchasing, pay attention to the band size: it's what supports the bust, not the straps. The band under the bust should lie horizontally and not ride up the back. If the straps dig into your shoulders, the band size is one size too big. The cup is good when it fits snugly all over, and the underwire rests on your ribs, not on your breast.

How to choose your size

A push-up works well on smaller cups and on a bust that has lost firmness after breastfeeding. On large cups the padding usually gets in the way, because it adds volume where there is no shortage of it - an underwired bra with soft cups is the better choice then.

When buying, pay attention to the band: it is the band that holds the bust, not the straps. The band under the bust should sit horizontally and must not ride up at the back. If the straps dig into your shoulders, the band is one size too big. The cup fits when it lies flat across its whole surface and the underwire rests on the ribs, not on breast tissue.

Which style to choose

A push-up is a construction with a pad under the lower part of the cup, which lifts the breast and moves it closer to the centre. The effect depends on the thickness and shape of that pad: a wedge sewn in permanently gives strong lift and a narrow cleavage, while thin foam with a slight thickening at the bottom only rounds the line. In some styles the pads are removable, which lets you wear the same bra two ways.

Fabrics and comfort

A push-up works best under V-necks and under fitted tops, because it raises the bust line and evens out the shape. Under a fine knit, choose versions with smooth foam and no lace on the outside, as lace shows through the fabric. Styles with detachable straps also allow a crossed setting, useful under backless clothes.
