A push-up bra has a pad sewn into the bottom of the cup that lifts and draws the bust inward. The effect depends on the thickness of the pad: models with light padding add roundness under a blouse, while versions with a distinct wedge create a prominent cleavage and are chosen for dresses with deep necklines.

Push-up bras work well for smaller cup sizes and for breasts that have lost their firmness after breastfeeding. For larger cup sizes, the pad usually gets in the way because it adds volume where it's not needed – in that case, a soft, underwired bra is a better choice.

When purchasing, pay attention to the band size: it's what supports the bust, not the straps. The band under the bust should lie horizontally and not ride up the back. If the straps dig into your shoulders, the band size is one size too big. The cup is good when it fits snugly all over, and the underwire rests on your ribs, not on your breast.

A push-up bra has padding under the lower part of the cup, which lifts the breast and moves it closer to the center. The effect depends on the thickness and shape of this padding: a wedge-shaped, permanently sewn-in pad provides strong lift and a narrow cleavage, while a thin foam pad with slight thickening at the bottom only rounds out the line. In some models, the pads are removable, allowing the same bra to be worn in two ways.

With push-up bras, it's worth remembering that the padding takes up some of the cup's volume, so if you wear a borderline size in a smooth bra, a cup size larger by one letter often works better here.

Push-up bras work best under V-necks and fitted tops because they raise the bust line and even out the shape. For thin knits, choose versions with smooth foam without lace on top, as lace will show through the fabric. Models with detachable straps also allow for a criss-cross setting, useful under open-back outfits.
