A cup size indicates a difference of about 12 centimetres between the bust circumference and the underbust circumference. This is the smallest size in a typical sizing chart. In practice, the letter describes the difference in circumferences, not the absolute size of the breasts: the same cup size with an underbust circumference of 70 and 90 means completely different volumes.

For A cup sizes, push-up and padded models that give shape, as well as bralettes without fasteners, often work best. More important than the letter here is the fit of the band – a loose band causes the bra to ride up and the cup to gape.

Check your size with two measurements: measure the underbust circumference tightly, on an exhale, and the bust circumference loosely, at the widest point. The difference indicates the letter, the underbust circumference – the number. Each size has corresponding sister sizes: the same breast also fits into a band one size smaller with a larger cup letter and into a band one size larger with a smaller cup letter. If your size is temporarily unavailable in a specific model, this is the first place worth checking.

The band under the bust should lie horizontally and be able to be pulled out by two fingers, the underwire should lie on the ribs, not on the breast, and the straps should not leave marks. If the cup ripples or the fabric stands away at the neckline, it is worth trying a smaller band with a bigger cup, in other words a sister size - for 75A those are 70B and 80AA.

When buying, pay attention to how far apart the cups are set. On a smaller bust a narrower centre gore looks more natural and stops the fabric standing away. Compare your measurements with the size guide - it is the quickest way to avoid buying on guesswork.

Washing is worth remembering too. The thin foam in moulded cups picks up creases easily, so bras of this kind are best dried flat and stored side by side, without folding one cup into the other.
