Elastic sewn into a folded hem is more durable than elastic sewn on top, and a wider elastic is less likely to dig in. The gusset should be made of 100% cotton, even in models that have a lace finish on the outside.

Cotton briefs are the most frequently purchased underwear item, and also the easiest to be disappointed with – all it takes is the wrong proportion of elastane or poorly sewn elastic for the model to roll down at the waist after an hour of wear.

Start with the style. Full briefs cover the entire bottom and provide the most confidence under trousers. Bikinis have a lower rise and narrower sides, so they fit well under low-rise jeans. Hipster and women's boxer briefs have a longer leg, which prevents them from riding up under a dress or during physical activity. High-waisted briefs compress the stomach and are suitable during pregnancy, postpartum, and in winter under high-waisted trousers. Brazilians expose the bottom at the back while maintaining full sides.

Fabric composition is the second filter. Cotton jersey alone is breathable but stretches over time; a few percent of elastane ensures it returns to shape. Densely woven fabric with a higher grammage is less sheer and withstands washing longer.

What to watch out for? Elastic sewn on top creates a visible line – if you want an invisible effect, look for briefs with elastic hidden in a tunnel or with laser-cut edges. Also, check if the crotch gusset is lined with cotton across its entire width. When buying several pairs of the same model, it's worth getting one first to check the sizing after the initial wash, as cotton can shrink slightly.

Neutral colours, close to skin tone, are less visible under light clothing than white, which reflects light under a thin blouse.
