Bamboo underwear

Bamboo fiber panties are soft to the touch and wick away moisture well. The fiber is made from bamboo cellulose, technologically it is close to viscose, but in practice it provides a smoother surface than cotton and a cooler feeling on the skin - which is why it is often chosen in summer and for night sweats.

The material is smooth, so bamboo knitwear is less visible under clothing than thicker cotton. It is also more elastic to the touch and lighter, which is important for high-waisted models worn all day.

The disadvantage of bamboo is its lower resistance to mechanical wear: the fiber is weaker when wet, so wash bamboo underwear at 30 degrees, on a short cycle, without strong spinning, and dry flat away from a radiator. With such treatment, it retains its softness much longer.

What to look out for

What else is worth checking

Bamboo in underwear is usually bamboo viscose - a fibre made from cellulose taken from the plant. The knit is noticeably smoother than cotton, cooler to the touch and better at wicking moisture, so it works well in summer and for anyone who finds ordinary cotton rough.

What to watch out for? Bamboo viscose is weaker than cotton when wet, so it copes badly with wringing and high spin speeds. Wash at 30°C, without bleach, and dry flat or on a line without stretching. Cared for that way, the fabric stays smooth for a long time.

If you prefer natural cotton, see cotton knickers, and if you want an invisible edge under close-fitting clothes - microfibre knickers. The right number comes from the hip measurement given in the size guide.

It is also worth knowing that bamboo knit holds odours less than synthetics, which matters when travelling and in hot weather. Do check the composition before buying, though - the word bamboo is sometimes used for blends that contain less than half bamboo viscose.
