Sister sizes for 85E: 80F, 90D. If 85E fits well around the band but the cup digs in or gapes, reach for a sister size instead of changing only the letter — the cup volume stays similar and it is the band that changes.

In size 85E the cup is roomy and the band deep enough to spread the weight without pressing on the ribs. The difference between the measurements here is around twenty centimetres. It is a size in which it pays to choose deliberately between smooth foam and a seamed cup, because each produces a different shape under clothes.

If you are moving down from a wider band, say from a 90, be prepared for the 85 to feel tight at first. The right point of reference is not the first impression but how the bra behaves after an hour of wear: the band should stay in place and the straps should not leave marks on your shoulders.

A similar cup volume is offered by 80F and 90D. It is worth ordering two numbers and comparing them on yourself, because the chart shows a smaller difference than you feel once the bra is on. If there is empty space between the breasts while the gore still lies flat, the cause is usually how far apart the cups are set in a given style, not a wrongly chosen letter.

A seamed cup, made of a lower and an upper section, lifts the bust higher and brings it closer to the centre. Smooth foam keeps a round shape and disappears completely under thin jersey, but at this volume it is less forgiving: any excess room shows immediately as a dent along the top edge.
