Bamboo fiber made its way into underwear because it combines properties that are usually mutually exclusive in other materials: it's smooth and cool to the touch like viscose, yet it handles moisture well. In practice, this means underwear that doesn't stick to the body on warm days and remains comfortable to wear for many hours.

It's worth knowing what bamboo actually is. Underwear most often uses viscose fiber from bamboo cellulose – a plant-derived material, chemically processed, with characteristic softness and a slight sheen. Hence its advantage and disadvantage at once: it's smoother than cotton, but when wet, it loses some of its strength, which is why it shouldn't be wrung out or washed at high temperatures.

Where does it work best? In briefs and boxers worn in summer, in pajamas, in socks for people whose feet sweat easily, and for people with sensitive skin who find stiffer cotton bothersome. Bamboo knitwear is usually thinner, so under light, fitted clothing, it's better to choose a color close to your skin tone.

What to watch out for? The composition: most products are blends with cotton, polyamide, or elastane, and it's the proportion of the latter that determines shape retention. The grammage: very thin knitwear drapes nicely but wears out faster. And care: wash at 30-40 degrees, without fabric softener, dry flat or on a hanger, without a tumble dryer, which can permanently shrink such a material.
