Choosing and fit

Washing and care

Bamboo has one weakness: wet fibre is mechanically weaker than cotton. Washing at 30 degrees on a short programme, without a hard spin and without fabric softener, clearly extends the life of the knit. Dry flat, not on a radiator.

Bamboo fibre found its way into underwear because it combines qualities that usually rule each other out: it is smooth and cool to the touch like viscose, while still handling moisture well. In practice that means underwear that does not cling on warm days and stays comfortable for hours.

It is worth knowing what bamboo actually is. Underwear normally uses viscose fibre made from bamboo cellulose - a plant-based material, chemically processed, with a characteristic softness and slight sheen. That is its advantage and its drawback in one: it is smoother than cotton, but wet it loses part of its strength, so it should never be wrung out or washed hot.

Where does it work best? In briefs and boxers worn in summer, in pyjamas, in socks for anyone whose feet sweat easily, and for people with sensitive skin who find stiffer cotton uncomfortable. Bamboo knit is usually finer, so under light, close-fitting clothing it is better to choose a colour close to your skin tone.

What to watch for? The composition: most products are blends with cotton, polyamide or elastane, and it is the share of the last one that decides how the piece holds its shape. The fabric weight - very fine knit drapes beautifully but wears through faster. And the care: wash at 30-40 degrees without softener, dry flat or on a hanger, and keep it out of the tumble dryer, which can shrink this material permanently.
