Lingerie for a wedding and under your dress: what works

Wedding lingerie has one task: to be invisible and last for several hours. Sounds simple, yet it is often this very element of the outfit that spoils the effect – a contrasting color under light fabric, a strap peeking out from under the neckline, or a panty line showing through a fitted skirt. Below, we'll go through all the decisions that need to be made, starting with the most important one.

Dress first, then lingerie

This is the only correct order. The style of lingerie depends on the cut of the dress, not the other way around. If you buy lingerie beforehand, you risk having to exchange it after the first fitting. Take your lingerie to the final fitting with the seamstress – this is the moment when everything becomes visible: whether the straps are showing, whether the bra band is visible under the fabric, or whether the panties create a line on the hips.

If the dress has a built-in corset with boning and cups, a separate bra may be unnecessary or even bothersome. The seamstress will tell you clearly after the first fitting.

Color: white lingerie under a white dress is a common mistake

Under light, thin fabric, white lingerie stands out more than beige because it reflects light differently than skin. The safest choice is a shade as close to your skin tone as possible – beige, nude, flesh-colored, or a strong beige or brown for darker complexions.

The same rule applies to guest dresses in pastel, cream, and light gray colors. Black lingerie only works under fabric that is truly opaque – check this under bright light, not in a dimly lit fitting room.

Neckline and back determine the style

Dress cut What works
Straps, classic neckline regular bra with smooth cups, without lace or embellishments
Wide straps falling off the shoulders strapless bra or bandeau model
Deep, open back bodysuit with a low back, low-back bra converter, or self-adhesive cups
Fitted top, smooth fabric seamless bra, only smooth cups
Dress with built-in corset often only panties are needed – check during the fitting

Smooth models without lace and bulky seams can be found in the invisible under clothing collection.

Panties: seamless or higher than you think

Under a fitted dress, panties with thin, digging-in elastic fare the worst – it's what creates a visible line on the hips. Two solutions really work:

  • Seamless panties, with laser-cut or glued edges, without elastic. Choose versions made of smooth microfiber, available in the microfiber panties section.
  • High-waisted panties that end above the line where the fabric adheres most tightly. Counterintuitively, they are less visible than low-rise models.

Thongs solve the problem of lines, but not everyone finds them comfortable for a day lasting several hours. If you don't wear them daily, a wedding is not the best time for a first attempt.

Bodysuit and slip

A bodysuit is a convenient solution where the dress has a fitted top: it provides one smooth layer instead of two and doesn't ride up. Models with a light shaping panel smooth the waistline but don't change the silhouette by a size – we wrote about what shapewear actually does in a separate guide. Available models are in the bodysuits and corsets section.

A slip is useful under dresses made of thin, clingy fabric: it eliminates static cling and makes the skirt drape more gracefully when walking. Choose a color close to your skin, not to the dress.

Tapes, adhesive cups, and other emergency solutions

For dresses with very deep necklines or open backs, the question of adhesive cups and shaping tapes arises. They work, but they have their limits, which are better known beforehand than during the reception:

  • Adhesive cups hold less effectively the warmer the room is and the larger the bust. For D cups and above, they rarely last for several hours.
  • Shaping tape applied to the skin will only work on dry, cosmetic-free skin – body lotion or oil will negate its effect.
  • Cups sewn into the dress are the most reliable solution because they cannot detach. It's worth asking the seamstress about them at the first fitting, before you start looking for lingerie.

Test each of these solutions at home, for several hours, while moving. This is the only way to find out how they will behave during dancing.

Bare legs or tights

For church and civil weddings, tights may be required by convention, but increasingly, it's simply a matter of weather and comfort. If you wear them, choose thin, 15-20 DEN tights in a shade close to your skin. It's good to have a spare pair – a run during the day is the most common minor accident. Models can be found in the 20 DEN tights collection.

What to have with you on the wedding day

  • a spare pair of tights,
  • a bra extender, if the dress is fastened on site,
  • spare straps, if the bra has detachable straps,
  • blister plasters – they are more useful than anything else,
  • safety pins.

Lingerie for a wedding guest

The rules are the same, only the stakes are lower. For a dress made of thin fabric, a smooth, skin-colored bra and seamless panties will work well. For a dress made of thicker material, lace lingerie can be worn, because the lace will not show through the fabric. If you are unsure about your bra size, start with the size calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a strapless bra stay up all day?

It will, if the band is tight enough – in strapless models, the band, not the straps, bears all the weight. For larger busts, it's often necessary to go down one band size and up one cup size, meaning opting for a sister size.

When should I buy wedding lingerie?

After the dress fitting, but not in the last week. You need time to exchange sizes if something doesn't fit.

Should I wash new lingerie before the wedding?

Yes, one gentle wash removes production residue and helps the fabric lie better on the body. Do this at least a few days in advance so everything has time to dry completely flat.

Can shapewear be worn all day at a wedding?

Yes, but choose the lightest compression level that achieves the desired effect. Strongly constricting models are comfortable for two or three hours; after several hours, they start to interfere with eating and dancing.

What to do if the dress is only fastened on site?

Arrive in your final lingerie, not a different set "for travel time." Any change of lingerie after the dress has been fitted will alter how the top lies.
