Sports bra: how to choose for your workout

A sports bra is not an accessory to your workout attire – it's a crucial element that determines the comfort of your entire training session. A regular bra isn't designed for repetitive vertical motion, which is why when running or jumping rope, it quickly starts to chafe, ride up, or rub. In this guide, we explain how to choose a model for your type of activity, the difference between compression and cups, and how to check your size when trying it on.

Why a regular bra isn't enough

During movement, breasts shift not only up and down but also sideways and forwards. A regular bra is designed for static positions: it has a narrower band, more delicate straps, and cups that don't maintain their shape when jolted. The result is chafing under the arms, a slipping band, and a feeling of weight on the shoulders.

A sports bra solves this in three ways: with a wider band under the bust, wider straps, and a fabric with a higher elastane content that returns to shape after every movement.

Three levels of support

Level Activity Model features
Light yoga, pilates, stretching, walking thin material, narrow straps, often pull-over style
Medium cycling, gym, strength training, dancing wider band, thicker straps, sometimes adjustable
Strong running, jumping rope, team sports, HIIT wide band, back closure, molded cups, H-back or X-back straps

The support level is chosen based on your most dynamic activity of the week, not the average. If you run once a week, you need a strong support model, even if you exercise more gently for the rest of the week. We have gathered available models in the sports bras collection.

Compression vs. cups

These are two different methods of stabilization, and it's important to understand the difference because comfort depends on it.

  • Compression – the bra presses the bust against the chest, usually without separate cups. Simple in construction, comfortable, works well for smaller busts and lighter activities. For larger busts, it creates a flattening effect and is less effective at limiting movement.
  • Separate cups – each breast is supported individually, just like in a classic bra. It distributes weight better, doesn't flatten, and is suitable for cup sizes C and above, as well as for any running activity.
  • Combined solutions – cups plus an external compression layer. Offers the most support, most often found in running models.

Large bust and sports

For cup size D and larger, three things make the biggest difference: a back closure instead of pulling over the head, wide adjustable straps, and a wide band under the bust. H-back or cross-back straps relieve pressure from the neck, which is important for longer workouts. Material

The base is a knitted fabric made of polyamide or polyester with elastane – it dries quickly and returns to its shape. Cotton on the outer part is pleasant to the touch and works well for calmer activities, but it absorbs sweat and takes a long time to dry, so it can be uncomfortable during intense workouts. Models with removable pads offer flexibility: the pad can be removed for washing, preventing it from deforming in the washing machine.

Pay attention to the seams: in a good sports model, they are flat and positioned so as not to run through areas of greatest friction, such as under the armpit and in the center of the chest.

Size: how to check it on yourself

A sports bra size is determined the same way as a regular bra – by your underbust measurement and bust measurement. The size calculator and size chart can help with this. After putting it on, check four things:

  • The band under the bust should lie horizontally and not ride up when you raise your arms.
  • The straps should not dig into your shoulders – if they do, the weight is being held by the strap instead of the band, meaning the band is too loose.
  • The cup should fit snugly without wrinkles and without spillage from the side.
  • Movement test – a few jumps in the fitting room. If you feel a jolt, you need a higher level of support, not a smaller size.

If the bra rides up or the straps fall off, the cause usually lies in the band – we have detailed this in the guide bra rides up, straps fall off.

How many to own and how to rotate them

One sports bra is enough for one workout a week. For three or more, two or three are sensible, and not just because of washing: elastane fabric needs several hours to regain full elasticity after intense stretching. A model used daily, without a break, loses support faster than two used alternately.

A practical tip when buying: if you buy two, get them in different constructions – one pull-over style for calmer workouts and one with a back closure for running. Two identical medium-support models will not cover both extreme situations.

Washing and lifespan

A sports bra wears out faster than an everyday bra because the elastane works during every workout and is also in contact with sweat. Wash it after every use at a temperature of up to 30 degrees, without fabric softener – fabric softener builds up on the fibers and deprives the fabric of its elasticity. Do not tumble dry or dry on a radiator. We have gathered details in the guide how to wash underwear and bras.

Signs it's time for a new one: the band has stopped holding and can be pulled several centimeters away from your back, the fabric has lost its elasticity, or after a workout, there are marks in places where there weren't any before.

Frequently asked questions

Can a sports bra be worn daily?

Yes, if it's comfortable. Light models and bralette tops work well as everyday underwear – you can also find them in the wire-free bras collection.

Can a sports bra have underwires?

Yes, it can. A well-fitted underwire does not interfere with movement because it cups the breast, rather than pressing on it. It's important that it ends behind the breast tissue, not on it.

Two bras at once – does it work?

This is an emergency solution, not a long-term one. It increases friction and puts strain on the shoulders. A single model with the appropriate level of support yields better results.

How often should it be replaced?

It depends on the frequency of workouts and washing. A practical indicator is the condition of the band under the bust – when it stops holding, the model no longer fulfills its purpose, regardless of how it looks.
