In winter, tights stop being just an accessory and start serving as an insulating layer. The problem is that the packaging usually shows only one number – DEN – which isn't enough to predict whether a given pair will keep you warm at minus five degrees. In this guide, we explain what, besides thickness, determines warmth, how cotton, wool, and internal-layer tights look, and when it's better to opt for a completely different solution.
What really makes tights warm
DEN is a unit of linear mass density of yarn: it indicates how many grams 9000 meters of thread weighs. The higher the number, the thicker the thread, the denser the knit, and the less sheer the leg. At least four things simultaneously influence the feeling of warmth:
- Fiber type. Polyamide with elastane fits well and is flexible, but it doesn't provide much warmth on its own. Cotton and wool retain heat much better because more air is trapped between their fibers.
- Weave and finish. Knitted fabric brushed on the inside, velour, or with a fleece layer retains heat better than smooth knit of the same weight.
- Fit. Tights that are too loose create air pockets that quickly cool down. Tights that are too tight compress and, paradoxically, can also make you feel colder.
- What's on top. Even the thickest tights under a short skirt won't replace trousers in strong wind.

What thickness for what weather
The ranges below are approximate – differences between individuals can be significant, and wind can lower the perceived temperature more than the thermometer itself.

Cotton and wool tights
Tights with a cotton blend are the most common choice for cold days when we don't want to wear trousers. Cotton provides a pleasant, matte look and retains heat well, but it has two characteristics worth noting: it absorbs moisture and dries slower, and knitwear with a high cotton content is less elastic, so tights can bulge at the knees after a few hours of wear.
Versions with wool (most often merino) are warmer at the same thickness and handle moisture better because wool retains heat even when slightly damp. However, they can be more noticeable on the skin – if you have sensitive skin, check the wool content on the label.

What "thermal" means on the packaging
The word "thermal" is not strictly defined, and different manufacturers interpret it differently. In practice, it most often refers to one of three solutions:
- Fabric brushed on the inside – a soft, fuzzy backing that traps a layer of air against the skin. The tights look like regular ones but are significantly warmer.
- Fleece layer – the warmest option, for high grammages. They give an effect similar to thin leggings.
- "Warm but look thin" effect – models with a printed or profiled pattern that look thin and sheer from the outside but are insulated on the inside.
Instead of relying solely on the slogan, it's worth checking the composition and fabric description. This is the only information that truly tells you what to expect.
Size in winter: one size too small is a bad idea
Thicker tights have less elastane relative to the whole and are less forgiving of a sizing error. If you are on the borderline between two sizes in thin 20 DEN tights, it's almost always better to choose the larger size for 100 DEN versions. Tights that are too tight will slip down at the waist, wrinkle behind the knees, and wear out faster in the crotch.
Manufacturers most often provide sizes based on height and hip circumference – these are the two values worth measuring before purchase, rather than relying on clothing size.
When tights are not enough
In really low temperatures, layering is often more sensible than seeking increasingly thick tights. The following work well:
- leg warmers worn over tights, which protect the most exposed parts of the calves,
- over-the-knee socks and knee-high socks under trousers,
- leggings as a standalone layer under a dress or long skirt.
Two thinner layers usually provide better warmth than one thick layer of the same total grammage, because air is trapped between them.
How to care for warm tights
Thick tights are primarily damaged by high temperatures and drying on a radiator – elastane loses its elasticity, and the knit no longer returns to its shape. Wash at temperatures up to 30 degrees, preferably in a laundry bag and on a delicate cycle, without fabric softener. Dry flat, away from heat sources. Frequently asked questions
Is 100 DEN enough for winter?
In the city, for short trips between home, car, and office – usually yes. For a longer walk in freezing weather, models with cotton, wool, or a fleece layer will work better.
Can cotton tights be washed with other laundry?
Preferably not. Zippers, Velcro, and hooks on other clothes are the main cause of snags. A laundry bag solves the problem entirely.
Do thicker tights make you look slimmer?
Matte, dark fabric optically evens out the leg and hides skin imperfections. This is a visual effect – tights with a standard cut do not shape the figure. If you are looking for a compression effect, look for models described as shaping or with sewn-in shorts.
Why do warm tights pill?
Knitwear with a high content of cotton and wool pills in areas of greatest friction – inner thighs, knees. This is a normal phenomenon, not a defect. Washing in a laundry bag and avoiding the dryer helps to limit it.
