What to look out for

For a fuller bust, look for several features at once: a cup seamed from two or three sections instead of smooth foam, a wide underbust band, a three-row hook fastening, a high side under the arm and wide, adjustable straps. That construction lifts the bust and takes the load off your shoulders.

Fabrics and comfort

The most common mistake is a band that is too big and a cup that is too small. If the band rides up at the back, the straps leave marks and the breast spills out at the side or the top, drop one band size and go up one or two letters. The same bust fits several sister sizes, for example 80E and 85D.

Delivery and returns

What else is worth checking

In larger cups a well-fitted bra stops being a question of looks and becomes a question of your spine. All the weight should be carried by the underbust band, not the straps - and that is the first thing to check when your shoulders or neck ache by the end of the day.

Construction counts for more here than in smaller sizes. A wide underbust band, three or four rows of hooks, higher sides with side boning and wider straps genuinely spread the load. A sectioned cup sewn from two or three pieces supports and shapes better than a single moulded one, because the seams direct the tissue inwards. A balconette with a fuller lower cup gives support while leaving the neckline open. Non-wired models can be comfortable, but in a large cup they give less lift - use them alongside a wired bra, not instead of one.

What to watch out for? The underwire should enclose all the breast tissue and rest on the ribs rather than on the breast; if it digs in, the cup is usually too small. The centre gore between the cups should sit flat against the chest. You should be able to lift the straps about two fingers away, and if they leave grooves the weight is being carried in the wrong place, which usually comes from a band that is too loose.

A common mistake is buying an ever larger band when it is cup room that is missing. The effect is the opposite - the bra rides up at the back. The right direction is the same band with a bigger letter. Washing in a laundry bag with the hooks done up and drying flat protects the construction.
