What to look out for

In practice the letter describes the difference between two measurements, not the absolute size of the breast: the same cup on a 70 band and on a 90 band is a completely different volume.

What else is worth checking

From a C cup upwards it is worth paying attention to the width of the underbust band and to whether the underwire encloses the whole breast right up to the armpit. Compression sports models still work, but for running a model with separate cups is the better choice.

Fabrics and comfort

Check your size with two measurements: take the underbust measurement firmly, breathing out, and the bust measurement loosely, at its widest point. The difference gives the letter, the underbust measurement - the number. Every size has its sister sizes: the same bust also fits one band smaller with the next letter up, and one band larger with the next letter down. If your size is temporarily unavailable in a particular model, that is the first place worth looking.

Delivery and returns

The underbust band should sit horizontal and pull away about two fingers, the underwire should rest on the ribs and not on the breast, and the straps should not leave marks. A C cup is not a fixed volume - it describes a difference of about fifteen centimetres between the bust measurement and the underbust measurement. That is why 70C, 80C and 90C hold different amounts of tissue despite the same letter. Fitting starts with the band. A correct band runs horizontally, sits closely and does not ride up when you raise your arms. Only then do you check the cup: tissue should not spill out at the top or the side, and the centre gore between the cups should touch the chest. If the gore stands away, the cup is too small, although it can feel like the opposite.

What to watch out for? Spare room in the fastening - do up a new bra on the loosest row. The fact that sizing differs between manufacturers, so the label from your previous bra will not replace the size guide. And sister sizes: if a given model is unavailable in your size, one band larger with one letter smaller, or the other way round, can be the alternative.

Practically every construction is available in a C cup. A model with a smooth moulded cup gives the most neutral line under fine knits. A soft cup with no padding is more comfortable all day and follows the natural shape better. A balconette lifts the bust and opens up the neckline. Lightly padded lace models are a compromise between looks and support. Sports versions should have a wide band and wider straps.
