Microfibre knickers are the first choice under fine jersey dresses, pencil skirts and leggings.

Many styles are seamless: the edges are laser-cut or bonded, so they leave no line on the thigh or at the waist. These knickers have no label sewn into the seam either - a print replaces the tag, which removes any scratching.

Microfibre dries fast and does not shrink in the wash, but it does not absorb moisture the way cotton does. That is why it is worth choosing styles with a cotton gusset, especially for all-day wear and for exercise.

Microfibre is a very fine synthetic yarn, usually polyamide or polyester, knitted into a smooth, slightly stretchy fabric. In underwear its main strength is that it barely shows under close-fitting clothes - especially in versions with a bonded or laser-cut edge, with no hem and no seam.

Microfibre has two drawbacks worth knowing about. First, it wicks moisture less well than cotton, which is why many styles have a cotton gusset - check this in the description. Second, it copes badly with heat: washing above 40°C and the tumble dryer take the smoothness out of the fabric and make it pill sooner.

If you are buying them for a particular dress, think about the colour. Under a fine pale fabric it is a shade close to your skin tone that disappears, not white or black, which stand out clearly against the skin and draw an outline through the fabric.
