Fabric and comfort

With socks, the label tells you most. A high cotton content means breathability and softness, added polyamide gives resistance to wear at the heel and toe, and elastane keeps the leg up on the calf. Care is simple: wash at 30 degrees, inside out, without softener, which reduces the absorbency of cotton. Wash wool on a wool programme and dry it flat.

Knee-highs call for particular attention to the elastic - it should hold the leg below the knee without leaving a clear mark on the skin.

What to watch for? Sock sizes are given as ranges, for example 35-38 or 38-41. If your shoe size falls on the border between two ranges, the smaller range gives a tighter fit and the larger a looser one, though finer knit may then wrinkle under the toes. Check the type of toe seam as well; a flat seam is less noticeable inside a narrow shoe.
