Types of pyjamas

• Sets with long sleeves and long bottoms – for colder nights and for heated flats in winter.
• Pyjamas with short sleeves and shorts – for summer and for anyone who runs warm at night.
• Mixed sets – short sleeves with long bottoms, or the other way round.
• Nightdresses – loose and airy, in a range of lengths.
• Button-through pyjamas – buttoned the whole way down, practical for breastfeeding mums, for example.

Fabrics

Cotton breathes and is easy to care for – it is the most common choice. Viscose and modal are very soft, drape lightly and feel pleasantly cool. Pyjamas in a heavier knit or with polyester in the mix are warmer. The composition and washing instructions are given with every style.

The choice starts with the fabric. Cotton is versatile and breathes well, but it turns damp if you sweat at night. Viscose and modal give a smoother surface and a cooler feel against the skin. Terry knit or fleece is the winter option, warmer but less breathable. Short-sleeve sets with shorts work in summer; long bottoms with a cuff work in winter.

What to look for

The second thing is the finishing. The waistband elastic should be covered in a casing, ideally with a drawstring as well, because then it does not dig in and you can adjust it. A button fastening makes getting dressed easier, but it gets in the way if you sleep on your front.

When ordering a set, check whether the top and bottom are sold as a single size or separately. If your chest and hips are different sizes, it is easier to buy the two pieces separately, provided the manufacturer lists them as separate items.
