Wool socks are the warmest category of socks. Wool provides warmth even when damp, making it better suited for the mountains, fishing, and outdoor work than cotton, which chills the foot when wet.

The type of wool matters. Merino is thin and non-itchy, making it suitable for everyday socks and sports shoes. Thicker sheep's wool and blends with acrylic produce winter socks with a distinct, fluffy texture. Almost always, there is an admixture of polyamide or elastane in the composition – this is responsible for the durability of the heel and toes and for preventing the sock from slipping down the calf.

Fabric and comfort

Wool has one advantage over cotton that settles everything in winter: it keeps you warm even when damp. Wool fibre traps air between its crimps and moves water vapour away instead of soaking it up - which is why a foot in wool socks stays warm longer inside a boot where cotton would turn cold and wet.

Which style to choose

What to watch for? Thickness - a thick wool sock can take half a size out of a shoe, so in tight footwear the effect is the opposite of what you wanted, because pressure restricts circulation. Composition: with a wool content below the mid teens, the thermal behaviour is closer to acrylic. And washing - a wool programme up to 30 degrees, no softener, dried flat. High temperatures and a hard spin cause irreversible felting.
