How to choose your size

They are worn with skirts and dresses, often as part of an outfit, and also as a warmer layer in winter. In fine versions, rated in DEN, they give an effect close to stockings but without a suspender belt; in knitted cotton or wool versions they are simply warm.

When choosing a size, look at your thigh measurement at the point where the sock ends, not just at your shoe size. A top that is too narrow will restrict and slide down after a few steps, one that is too wide will fall.

Which style to choose

The main issue here is keeping them in place. The knit has to be stretchy enough above the knee, because that is where the leg changes girth most as you bend it. A wide welt and added elastane stop them sliding, and styles with a silicone strip stay put even on smooth skin.

Fabric and comfort

Composition decides warmth. Cotton with elastane is the all-rounder, wool and acrylic blends are the warmest, and fine nylon versions are decorative. Try a heavier pair inside your shoe before buying several, as the thicker leg may turn out to be tight.

Store them folded flat rather than rolled into a ball - rolling stretches the welt, and the welt is what holds the sock above the knee.
