How to choose your size

Sister sizes for 80F: 75G, 85E. If 80F fits well around the band but the cup digs in or gapes, reach for a sister size instead of changing only the letter — the cup volume stays similar and it is the band that changes.

80F means a band of 78-82 cm and a difference of 25-27 cm. At that volume the bra is a structural item - how well it fits decides whether your shoulders and upper back ache by the end of the day.

The first time you try a bra on, do the raised-arms test and the lean-forward-and-scoop test. If the tissue settles back in place once you straighten up and nothing spills out at the side, the size is right. If your style is missing from this collection, also check cup F in other band sizes.

What to look out for

Three elements are crucial. A deep band with at least three rows of hooks spreads the pressure over a larger area. A long underwire reaching past the underarm line keeps the tissue in place. Straps wider than a centimetre, set closer to the spine, slip off the shoulders less often.

Fabrics and comfort

Avoid styles with a shallow cup and a narrow bottom edge - at a larger volume they lose their shape quickly. It is better to choose seamed cups with a side panel made from fabric that does not stretch crosswise. Hand washing or a mesh bag, with no tumble drying, genuinely extends the life of such a bra, because the wire does not get bent out of shape in the drum.
