How to find your size

In practice the letter describes the difference between two measurements, not the absolute size of the bust: the same cup on a 70 band and on a 90 band holds a completely different volume.

At cup F the essentials are: a firm, wide band, a cup made from three panels and an underwire reaching high into the underarm. Straps should be adjustable and wider than standard, otherwise they leave marks on the shoulders.

Check your size with two measurements: take the underbust measurement firmly, breathing out, and the bust measurement loosely, at the fullest point. The difference gives you the letter, the underbust measurement - the number. Every size has its sister sizes: the same bust also fits a band one size smaller with the next cup up, and a band one size larger with the next cup down. If your size is temporarily unavailable in a particular style, that is the first place worth looking.

Which style to choose

At cup F, simply built styles rarely work. A seamed cup with at least one horizontal seam, together with a side panel reinforced by a firmer band, is almost always the better option. Check whether the straps adjust on both sides and whether they are set too close to the shoulders - straps that slip off quickly become tiring at this volume.

When buying a second bra in the same letter, bear in mind that the style changes how the fit feels far more than the colour does. The same size in a lace version and in smooth foam can sit differently along the top edge, so it is worth comparing both variants before you order several pairs from one series.

What to look out for

The fastening matters too. Three rows of hooks is the minimum; a wide fastening spreads the pressure better and does not dig into the back.

With your first purchase in this letter it makes sense to take two neighbouring sizes - your own and its sister - and compare them on yourself. The difference between them can look subtle in a table, but is clear once the bra is on, especially around the underwire at the underarm.
