How to choose your size

The higher the number, the thicker the yarn, and so the denser, more opaque and warmer the knit. These tights are sheer, even out leg colour slightly and add no warmth. They are the usual choice for the office in summer and under light dresses, where a heavier knit would show.

At this denier colour matters a great deal: the shade should be close to your natural skin tone or half a tone darker, because anything too light gives the leg a greyish cast.

Tights are sized by height and weight together, using the manufacturer's chart - your dress size is misleading here. Tights that are too small pull down at the gusset and split sooner across the thighs; too large, they wrinkle at the ankle and slide down at the waist. If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one: knit under less strain lasts longer.

Fabric and comfort

15 DEN is a summer denier with slightly more staying power than the very finest tights. They stay sheer and light, but are a little less prone to snagging, which counts when you wear them to work every day.

This denier looks its best in nude shades, because it evens out skin tone without changing it. In black it gives a lightly smoked effect rather than full coverage - if you want solid black, 40 DEN and above is the right choice.

Which style to choose

When choosing, look at how the waistband and brief are finished. A wide, flat waistband will not roll under a fitted skirt, and a reinforced brief extends the life of the pair. Styles with Lycra recover their shape better after a full day of wear.

Washing and care

Fine tights are best hand washed in lukewarm water and never wrung out. Press the excess water out in a towel and dry them flat. Heat and spinning weaken the elastane, and elastane is what brings the knit back into shape. If you use body lotion, wait until it has fully absorbed: a greasy film on the skin makes fine knit cling and wear through faster.
