Tights 70 DEN

70 DEN refers to decidedly opaque and noticeably warmer tights. DEN is a unit of yarn mass: the number of grams per 9000 meters of fiber. The higher the value, the thicker the thread, and thus the denser, more matte, and warmer the fabric. The fabric is thick and matte, behaving more like thin leggings than classic tights. They are worn in winter under dresses, skirts, and sweater dresses, and also under trousers as an insulating layer.

At this denier, length becomes more significant: tights that are too short will pull down the crotch and wrinkle at the ankle. Check the manufacturer's size chart for the height range, not just the letter size.

It is less prone to ladders, but it shows every crease at the ankle and behind the knee, so choosing the size by height and body weight matters more here than it does at 15 DEN. Too large a size will bunch at the foot, too small a one will drop the crotch and shorten the life of the pair.

Fabric and comfort

70 DEN is an opaque denier: the knit is matt, even in colour and clearly warming. It comes into its own from late autumn, under skirts and dresses worn on colder days, and as a layer under trousers.

Comfort comes from a wide waistband, a reinforced foot and a flat seam. Some styles at this denier include a share of cotton, which adds to the warmth you feel.

Worth checking before you buy

Thicker knit takes up more room inside a shoe, so with winter boots it is worth checking that the foot is not squeezed. Pressure inside the boot restricts circulation and ends up chilling the foot faster than a finer layer would. Store them folded flat rather than rolled, as rolling stretches the waistband, and the waistband is what holds the tights in place.
