40 DEN is the threshold at which tights become opaque. DEN is a unit of yarn mass: the number of grams per 9000 meters of fiber. The higher the value, the thicker the thread, and thus the denser, more matte, and warmer the fabric. The fabric is matte and uniform; the skin does not show through. This is the most frequently purchased denier for autumn and winter, worn with dresses and skirts, both in black and in colors.

Black 40 DEN tights appear darker on the leg than 20 DEN and better conceal capillaries and discolorations. For this denier, it is advisable to choose models with flat seams and a gusset in the crotch, as the fabric is denser and seams are more noticeable.

Tights size is selected based on height and weight combined, according to the manufacturer's chart – clothing size is misleading here. Tights that are too small pull in the crotch and tear faster on the thighs; those that are too large wrinkle at the ankle and slide down at the waist. If you are on the borderline between two sizes, choose the larger one: less stressed fabric lasts longer.

40 DEN is a transitional denier – the knit is already opaque, but not as thick as winter models. In practice, this is the most versatile choice for autumn and spring, and in black, also for colder winter days under a longer skirt.

The collection currently includes 36 models, primarily from the Legs, Anmar, and Conte lines. You'll find both plain and subtly glossy versions, as well as models with a reinforced panty portion that gently smooths the hip line.

For this denier, it's worth paying attention to the composition and the waistband finish. A wide, flat waistband won't roll down under a fitted skirt, while a narrow one can be less stable. If tights slide down in the crotch, it usually means the vertical size is too small, i.e., too short for your height in the size chart, rather than too small an circumference.

Thicker models are found in 100 DEN tights, and thinner ones in 20 DEN tights. You can check the number in the size chart, and an thigh-high alternative can be found in stockings.

If you wear tights daily, it's more practical to buy two identical pairs at once. If one leg gets damaged, you'll have a spare in the same shade, and shades of black can vary more than you'd think between production batches.
